The DENR and EMB linked up with the Tapaz local government unit as they inaugurated the newly constructed Tapaz Waste Management in Brgy. Agcococ, Tapaz, Capiz on June 9, 2022.
In attendance were municipal mayor, the Hon. Roberto O. Palomar, municipal Vice Mayor, Hon. Ma. Fe Gardoce, DENR Undersecretary, Ret. MGen Benito Antonio De Leon, EMB Director Engr. William P. Cuñado, EMB Assistant Director, Engr. Vizminda Osorio, DENR 6 Regional Executive Director, Livino B. Duran, and EMB 6 Regional Director, Atty. Ramar Niel V. Pascua.
The said sanitary landfill facility has a total lot of 1.8 hectares and has a daily waste handling capacity of five metric tons covering a total land area of 18,000 square meters and is compliant with the RA 9003. The Tapaz Waste Management Center includes a Central Materials Recovery Facility with a daily capacity of 3 tons, a Vermi Composting Facility having 0.5 tons a day capacity, a Windrow Composting Facility with a daily capacity of 1.5 tons, and a Motorpool Facility accommodating 10 trucks daily. The Municipality of Tapaz plans to cater nearby municipalities to dump their respective solid wastes in the facility.
The construction of the facility started on November 24, 2020 and was finished on November 30, 2021 with a tentative schedule of operation on July 16, 2022.
The mayor of Muncipality of Tapaz, the Hon. Roberto “Nonong” Palomar said that the facility is a testament of the municipality’s hard work, commitment, and collective good governance.
“This is the first sanitary landfill facility that I have visited, and compared to the pictures reported, the Tapaz Waste Management Center is more than the standard sanitary landfill and with that I congratulate all of you.” said De Leon, the DENR Undersecretary for Enforcement, Solid Waste Management, Local Government Units Concerns and Attached Agencies.
The Tapaz sanitary landifill is the first of such outside Roxas City in the province of Capiz.
