The Boracay Island rehabilitation is now on the hands of the leaders of the Province of Aklan and Municipality of Malay as they formally accepted the said responsibility and its maintenance on June 16, 2022.

Acting Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jim O. Sampulna, Chair of the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force (BIATF), led the turning over ceremony to Aklan Governor, Florencio Miraflores and Malay Mayor, Frolibar Bautista at the Balabag Wetland Park, Boracay Island.

Secretary Sampulna’s message included a timeline of the BIATF’s lifetime as created by Executive Order 53 lasting up only to May 22, 2020 but was then extended until May 8, 2021 and finally until June 30, 2022 through EO 115 and EO 147 respectively.

The DENR’s role in this mission is not yet over, although there is a shift in frontline duties, the department will still continue to monitor the progress of the rehabilitation projects as he stressed the new challenge for the local government to maintain sanitation and discipline of the people.

DENR 6 Regional Executive Director, Livino B. Duran said that there should be continuing intervention to sustain the efforts done as he also mentioned that they are looking for additional sanitary landfills for the solid waste management of the Island and road construction as a form of intervention for infrastructure support.
